First installed in 1993, the famous Paris history plaques can be found all over the city. Now, in the only published translations, you can discover the stories they tell. The first book of the series begins in Montmartre where we uncover the story of an escape from besieged Paris by hot air balloon, the donkey who fooled the art establishment, and the man who walked through walls. We take you to Picasso's first studio, to the famous Elysee Montmartre, the Moulin Rouge, the Chat Noir and the house where Renoir lived. Montmartre attracted poor artists and writers who could only afford the low rents outside the city walls. But it is was the village atmosphere of the hilltop settlement that kept them there, and it is that charm which keeps tourists returning again and again. Both frequent and first time visitors will enjoy discovering a hidden side of Montmartre as the guide takes you on a treasure hunt to find each plaque, reading history as you go. It includes several rare pictures from the archives of local historians, and some of sites that are closed to the public. The walks meander through the streets of Montmartre to less famous sites too, such as the tiny Martyr's chapel where St Denis was said to have been executed, the charming Theatre de l'Atelier, and the site of the uprising that led to The Paris Commune. You will learn about the tortured artist Maurice Utrillo, the firebrand revolutionary Louise Michel, and the poet Rimbaud's disastrous love-affair with Verlaine. Clearly written and well researched, with location maps, three walks and over seventy illustrations, this guide offers you an enjoyable way to learn more about the history of the Montmartre. These city history plaques are an elegant, unobtrusive and eco-friendly addition to the streets of Paris, and are fondly regarded by Parisians. 'Paris By Plaque - Montmartre' provides the only published translations, and further background to the events they describe. Short accounts of The Siege of Paris and the Commune are included, which may help those unfamiliar with this important period of the city's history to understand the plaques more fully. Explosive events in Paris' history ignited in Montmartre, often right where you stand reading the plaques. The convergence of artistic genius, political radicalism and uprising make Montmartre an exciting place to begin exploring the history of Paris. Montmartre was primarily a village community, and the close links between the buildings and characters in its history reflect that. We provide a 'Connections Map' which shows these links, allowing you to piece together where artists, models, writers and politicians lived and worked. Paris by Plaque Montmartre Vol 1 The Complete Guide to the Historic Plaques of Paris Anna Meakin 9780956761408 Books Reviews
I have been to Paris many times over the last 30 years but I hadn't noticed these Arthurian style plaques appear! Armed with this little book not only am I rediscovering Monmatre but learning a lot of history that was missing from my personal education. When I bought the book I wasn't planning another trip to the city so I armed myself with Google Streetview to follow the walks and recapture some of the feel of the medieval city. But it's the vivid histories and personalities that brought the experience alive for me. Vivid accounts and physical references that bring something very different to the city for me.The title implies a series but only one volume is listed, so I do hope they'll be more. How about a version so I don't forget it on my next trip?
Interesting, but not too comprehensive. Have always wondered about the plaques and found it helpful but not essential to my frequent Paris visits.
